We were honored and thrilled to be able to attend one of Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Rambles this past Saturday. Almost all of the band was able to go, and I opened up the show with brother Grahame (of Maiden Lane), the Pops (Phil), Justin Guip (a great drummer, and a front of house sound guy to boot), and the amazing Larry Campbell. Afterwards, the Ramble Band kicked things into high gear and performed one of the best shows I have ever seen. Switching between high energy horn-driven groovers like ‘Mardi Gras’ and heart-wrenchingly beautiful renditions of the classic ‘Long Black Veil,’ this band delivered. I was doubly happy at the end of the show to be able to join the clusterfuck of around 16 musicians to perform ‘The Weight,’ and even got to sing a verse (‘Picked up my bag….’). The night was best summed up by our close friend Kathy, who on the plane ride back turned to me and said “That was like going to church”. Amen.
I guess Rolling Stone was there to grace us with their presence… Pretty cool!
